FoxLight: Preventing Child Abuse

Written by : Shaul Turner (Good Day Colorado Anchor) - 4/3/2007

April is child abuse awareness month. Our FoxLight page will provide you with information and resources throughout the month about how to protect our kids.

Less than three percent of all child abuse is perpetrated by strangers. More than 97% of all victims (and their parents) knew the perpetrator prior to the abuse.

While predators come in many types, they usually share three common attributes:

  • They have access
  • They have opportunity
  • They have established a level of trust

Predators can be family, friends, and trusted members within our community. While this may be uncomfortable to accept, it is true!

"PLEASE KNOCK!" is a children's book with poems about personal boundaries, secrets and other relevant topics. Simply written for children, it also assists parents in discussing important issues.

Local author & therapist Erin Dolgan made an appearance on Good Day Colorado to talk about the problem of child abuse in Tuesday’s Foxlight segment.

Erin Dolgan's Website has details about how to get the book along with other relevant information related to preventing child abuse.
